The Dominican Republic is an attractive travel destination year-round, but depending on the season there are big differences in weather, water quality, and travel prices. As an organizer with years of experience, we share our assessment.
This is the best travel time for divers. The sky is mostly cloudless, water temperature is a pleasant 27–28 degrees, and underwater visibility is optimal. Rainfall is minimal, and tropical storms are extremely rare during this season. The main season is also when most Swiss tourists travel, which means our groups fill up quickly.
A special highlight is the whale season in the Bay of Samaná. Between January and March, thousands of humpback whales come to this region to give birth and mate. On the way to dive sites or during special whale-watching excursions, you can experience these majestic animals up close.
The rainy season brings higher humidity and occasional rain showers, mostly in the afternoon. Diving during this time is still possible in most regions, and prices are noticeably cheaper. Those who are flexible and want to experience nature in its tropical form will also find much beauty in the rainy season.
The official hurricane season lasts from June to November, but the most active phase is between August and October. We recommend special caution during this time and inform our guests early about any adjustments to the travel program.
For Swiss divers, we recommend the months of November through April. This time falls during the Swiss winter, which makes a Caribbean holiday particularly appealing. Temperatures in the Dominican Republic are especially pleasant then, and the contrast with the cold temperatures in Switzerland provides additional motivation.
The best time to dive in the Dominican Republic is during the Swiss winter. Use the main season for optimal conditions, or choose the rainy season for lower prices and fewer tourists. We are happy to advise you on choosing the right period.
