Bayahibe's Underwater World: What to Expect

Bayahibe is a small fishing village on the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic that has developed in recent years into the country's unofficial diving capital. And for very good reason: the underwater world here is simply breathtaking.

The St. George Wreck

The most famous dive site in Bayahibe is undoubtedly the wreck of the St. George, a former passenger ship deliberately sunk to create an artificial reef. The ship lies at 25 to 35 meters depth and is completely covered with coral. Inside the wreck, schools of fish swarm, and the atmosphere is unique. For experienced divers, a penetration dive through the wreck is possible.

The Reefs Around Isla Catalina

Just a short boat ride from Bayahibe lies Isla Catalina, an uninhabited island with one of the most spectacular wall dives in the Caribbean. "The Wall" is a vertical coral wall that drops from the surface to depths of over 40 meters. Here you'll see eagle rays, turtles, barracudas, and an abundance of reef fish.

Isla Saona and Its Underwater Meadows

The underwater meadows around Isla Saona are known for their starfish and rays. The shallow water makes this region ideal for snorkelers and beginners, but experienced divers also get their money's worth when they want to enjoy the calm, species-rich environment.

Water Temperature and Visibility

One of the secrets of Bayahibe's popularity is the excellent water quality. Visibility often reaches 25–35 meters, and the water is warm year-round. In winter, water temperature is around 25 degrees; in summer it reaches 29–30 degrees. A wetsuit is rarely needed.

Marine Fauna

The diversity of marine fauna in Bayahibe is impressive. Besides the species already mentioned, you'll regularly encounter spotted eagle rays, moray eels, pufferfish, trumpetfish, and impressive squid. Those who are lucky may even see whales or dolphins on the way to the dive site.

Conclusion

Bayahibe is no longer a secret tip, but it's popular for very good reason. The combination of wrecks, walls, and reefs makes it one of the most complete diving destinations in the world. With our organized package from Switzerland, you'll experience Bayahibe at its finest.
