One of the most common questions we receive from interested parties is: "Do I need a certificate to dive with you?" The short answer: it depends. In this article, we explain the different certification levels and which ones are relevant for our trips.
Worldwide there are three major diving certification organizations: PADI, SSI, and CMAS. All three are internationally recognized, and a certificate from one organization is accepted by dive bases worldwide. In Switzerland, PADI and SSI are most widespread, while CMAS is mainly known in Europe.
The Open Water Diver certificate (equivalent for PADI and SSI) is the minimum requirement for most of our dives. With this certificate, you can dive up to 18 meters deep and have learned the basic diving techniques. The course in Switzerland typically takes 3–4 days and costs between 500 and 700 francs.
The Advanced Open Water certificate allows dives up to 30 meters depth and opens the door to specialty dives such as night diving or wreck diving. For the St. George wreck in Bayahibe or Shark Point, we recommend this certificate.
For the most demanding dives in our program, particularly cave and cenote diving, a Rescue Diver certificate or higher is required. This certificate shows that you are capable of acting in emergency situations underwater.
No problem. We offer a try-dive course for beginners in cooperation with local dive schools. This "Discover Scuba Diving" course allows you to dive up to 12 meters deep under the supervision of an instructor, without prior training. Many of our guests use the first trip for such a course and return with a full Open Water certificate.
If you prefer to complete your certificate before the trip, we recommend taking the course in Switzerland. Many dive schools in Zurich, Bern, and Basel offer PADI and SSI courses. The theoretical part can even be completed online.
